A good overview of the way in which roles are being applied in various
projects is provided by Friedrich Steimann in a paper that can be obtained
from http://www.kbs.uni-hannover.de/~steimann/published/DKE-35-1.pdf (If,
like me, you have problems reading pages 9 and 11 of this file let me know
and I'll send you the file as an e-mail attachment.) On pages 86 and 87 of
this paper (its only 23 pages long, but page numbering is based on the page
numbers used in the original journal), there is a list of "ways in which
roles can be applied". Steimann shows how the software he has been working
on is able to meet most of these roles. It would be interesting to do the
same for roles in topic maps, which seem to be able to fulfil many of the
ways in which roles are currently being applied.

The paper also has an extensive bibliography on the use of roles in various
projects.
