My thinking is that the fact that "is-instanceOf" and "subclasses" are
handled special in TM (XTM, TMCL) does not necessarily mean that all
applications MUST use those (although as you point out this makes
sense in most cases):

If an application wants to introduce its own way of expresing a
relationship between an element and a set of things (class), then the
application might simply choose a different association type.

But even if there would be a loss of generality, I think the benefit
of hard-wiring some association outweights it.
