The recommendations of the Montréal meeting of WG3 are now
available at http://www.y12.doe.gov/sgml/sc34/document/0240.htm
and are also attached here for your convenience.

I would like to ask the four editors mentioned (Steve, Michel,
Lars Marius, and Graham) for their suggestions as to how we
should proceed.

Steve

****************************************************
Recommendations of the ISO/IEC JTC1/SC34/WG3 Meeting
****************************************************

Montréal, 11 August 2001

1. Defect Report on ISO 13250
-----------------------------

WG3 accepts N239 as the editors' response to the Defect Report
(N238) on ISO 13250 submitted by Japan.

2. Topic Map Data Model
-----------------------

WG3 expresses its thanks to Lars Marius Garshol for preparing a
preliminary requirements document (N241) for the topic map data
model. The editors of ISO 13250 are requested to use this
document as a starting point for a final requirements document
for a model that expresses the fundamental nature of topic maps.

WG3 recognises that this model may have to be expressed at
different levels in order to serve all its purposes, and
therefore requests that the following work items be pursued in
parallel with the finalisation of the requirements document:

1. Development of a Core (Level 0) Model that defines the
essential nature of topic maps at the lowest level and does
not distinguish between association types. This work should
use N243 as its starting point and take place under the
editorship of Steven Newcomb and Michel Biezunski.

2. Development of an Infoset (Level 1) Model, defined in terms
of the Core Model (or with an unambiguous mapping to it), and
additionally defining the semantics of topic-basename,
   basename-variantname, and topic-occurrence relationships.
This work should use N242 as its starting point and take
place under the editorship of Lars Marius Garshol and Graham
Moore. While WG3 tends towards a preference for the Infoset
as the modelling formalism for the Level 1 Model, other
formalisms (e.g., Express, UML, or Z) are not precluded from
   consideration.

All four editors are collectively charged with responsibility for
ensuring the complete compatibility of the two models.

3. Liaison with OASIS/TopicMaps.Org
-----------------------------------

WG3 proposes the establishment of a bilateral liaison with the new OASIS
member group for topic maps, the former TopicMaps.Org, appoints Steve Pepper
as its liaison for the meeting to take place on August 18-19 2001, and
invites OASIS/TopicMaps.Org to appoint its own liaison to WG3.

4. Acclamations
---------------

Hosting of Meeting.

WG3 expresses its appreciation to the Graphic Communications
Association/IDEAlliance for hosting this meeting of SC34's working
group 3 in Montréal.
